The Portuguese official history books state that King D. José was wounded while returning to the royal palace late at night, after visiting his mistress. She happened to be a member of the Távora family. To affirm his absolute power, the Marquis de Pombal - D. José's prime minister - took advantage of the incident to annihilate all the members of the Távora family. But there are many versions of what happened that day - September 3, 1758 - and the novel I am now writing deals with one interpretation.
